І. Вступна бесіда

- Today we’ll speak about art and artists, about their famous and the most expensive works.

- What kinds of art do you know?

- What does the word “art” mean?

- Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities; this article focuses primarily on the visual arts, which includes the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they are usually not for a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature, and other media such as interactive media are included in a broader definition of art or the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences, but in modern usage the fine arts, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, are distinguished from acquired skills in general, and the decorative or applied arts.

  • And now we’ll listen some facts about famous artists.

  1. William Hogarth

William Hogarth (1697-1764) was the first great English painter who raised English pictorial art to a high level of importance. He was a man of remarkably individual character and thought. W. Hogarth had friends among famous English writers J. Swift, H. Filding. He was the first English painter who brought painting closer to literature and theatre. His engravings of modern morality subjects  were aimed at a wide public, and their outstanding success established his financial independence. To safeguard his livelihood against pirated editions, he fought for legislation protecting artists' copyright.

Britain's first copyright act was passed in 1735, the year he published his satirical eight-part series The Rake's Progress. His other satirical series include A Harlot's Progress and Marriage la Mode. The teaching academy he established led to the founding of the Royal Academy (1768).

2. Reynolds Sir Joshua

Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723—1792), the first President of the Royal Academy of Arts, was not only a painter but the founder of the academic principles of the "British school". Reynolds was the most outstanding portraitist of the 18th century. In his pictures he did not only paint portraits but produced characters.

3. Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough (1727— 1788) was a brilliant portrait painter. A good amateur violinist and a lover of the drama, he was an artistic person. T. Gainsborough is the creator of the great English school of landscape painting. His great love for the English country and his delicate understanding of nature are felt in his pictures.

4. John Constable

John Constable is one of the greatest landscape painters. He was the first landscape painter who considered that every painter should make his sketches direct from nature, which is working in the open air. Constable was a realist. The most famous of his works are “Flatford Mill”, “The white horse”, “Waterloo Bridge” and others.

Constable may truly be considered the father of modern landscape painting.

5. Joseph Turner

Another famous English painter was Joseph Turner (1775—1851), whose business was to paint the light. He proved that with the help of  light it is, possible to show qualities of any subject. We know practically nothing about Turner's life. Son of a London barber, he started drawing and painting when he was a little boy. When Turner was thirteen, he chose the artistic career. In 1802 Turner was elected academician of the Royal Academy, where his oil paintings had been exhibited. He died at the age of seventy-six. Turner was a representative of Romanticism. The description of nature dominated in his paintings. In his work with colour he anticipated, in some degree, the practice of impressionists. In his late works he anticipated sometimes the practice of expressionists of the 20th. Turner's "The Shipwreck", "Burning of the Houses of Parliament" and "Snow Storm" are masterpieces of the great artist.

6. Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born February 25, 1841 in Limoges, France. When Renoir was young, he was a shoe tailor and a dress maker. When he was 13 be began decorating porcelain dishes. He was also close friends with Claude Monet.

Renoir believed that a person should work with his hands. He felt that working with his hands was what made him a working man. Some of his most famous paintings are portraits of women and groups of people. Renoir's paintings were done in the Impressionist style. People felt his use of color and light in his paintings, plus his talent for painting people, were what made his paintings so beautiful.

7. Claude Monet

Claude Monet was born in 1840 on November 14 in Paris. He grew up in LeHaver, near the sea. Even when he was young he was a very good artist. His pictures were so good that an art supply store let him hang his pictures in their window.

Monet's parents did not want him to become an artist because they thought he would not make a good living. That did not stop him though. When he was 20, he studied art at an inexpensive art school in Paris.

Monet often went on trips around France to paint. Sometimes, his friend Camille came along. Camille later became Monet's wife. They had two sons, Jean and Michel. In 1878, Camille got sick and died. A few years later, Monet got married again to a woman named Alice.

Later, Monet and his family moved to Giverny, a small town near Paris. This is where he painted his Impressionist wheatstack and cathedral paintings that became very famous. Their house also had a wonderful garden with a lily pond that had a Japanese bridge across it. These were his favorite things to paint.

Monet died in 1926 in Giverny. Many people came to his funeral. Unlike many artists, he was famous even before he died. Now his house in Giverny is a museum that is visited by many people.
