(Слайды)  What’s wrong? Some letters are missing. Can you name them? So, you see the word MUSIC, and our topic is “Music in our life”. Today we shall speak about different musical instruments, musical genres, styles and famous musicians.  We watch the video about history of pop music in Britain.

What’s wrong? Some letters are missing. Can you name them? So, you see the word MUSIC, and our topic is “Music in our life”. Today we shall speak about different musical instruments, musical genres, styles and famous musicians.

T: On the blackboard you can see a charming quotation:

P1. Music is a free art, an open-air art, an art boundless as the wind, the sky, the sea. (Debussy) (Музика - вільне мистецтво, відкрите мистецтво, мистецтво, безмежне як вітер, небо, море.)

(слайди 3,4) Do you agree?

P: I agree, because, music really makes me feel free and happy, when I listen to music I forget about everything.

T: Of course, we all think we know what music is, but I want you to read a definition from the Longman dictionary, that tells us what music really is. Fill in the gaps and read the definition. (Music is a series of sounds made by instruments or voices in a way that is exciting and pleasant)

Let’s do Brainstorming. What words do you associate with the word ‘music’?

T: So we need instruments to produce music. Look at the blackboard. Can you name the things that you see? (Grand piano, violin, French horn, trombone, trumpet, flute, clarinet, cymbals, drum, xylophone, maracas, guitar, electric guitar, banjo, accordion, harp, cello)

T: What groups can you divide the instruments into?  (String Instruments, percussion instruments, brass instruments, woodwind instruments)

T: You must divide instruments in the box into three columns:  string instruments, brass and woodwind instruments, percussion instruments.

Violin, gong, guitar, French horn, flute, trombone, xylophone, cello, clarinet, maracas, harp, drum, banjo, trumpet, cymbals

String instruments

Brass and Woodwind Instruments

Percussion instruments

So, we`ll travel to a very beautiful world, the world of music. We can`t live without music, can we? (No, we can`t)

Where can we hear music? (in the streets, parks, in cars, on TV, over the radio, in the shops, at discos, concerts…)

Yes, you are right. We can hear it everywhere. Music is a part of our life. So, what will our travelling be like? On our way we are going to do some stops at different stations, different styles of music, and you`ll do different tasks. So, let`s start!

HO1

P1: Put the phrases in the correct order to make up a dialogue.

― Great. How much is this?

― Thanks a lot. Goodbye.

― Excuse me, have you got the latest album of “Linking Park”?

― Thanks.

― Oh, pity. Do you have the new album of “Okean Elzy”?

― OK. I’ll have it.

P2: Put the phrases in the correct order to make up a dialogue.

― Yes, here you are.

― It’s 17.65.

― One moment, I’ll check. I think we have it.

― Here is your change and your disk.

― No, I’m afraid we have sold it out.

1 group – “What is your favourite singing band?”

2 group – “What do the people in a band have to be good at?”

3 group – “What is more important: appearance, singing, dancing, personality?”

Jazz is improvised music. The great jazz musicians are individual players and not really composers. Jazz grew out of Negro Blues, ragtime bands in about 1900.

Traditional jazz developed in New Orleans, a port in Louisiana. In the 1920s in New Orleans beautiful music filled the streets and cafes. The black and poor singers sang about their hard lives. The black music entered the whites’ culture changing the lifestyle of the people all over the world. The first well-known soloist and a real King of Jazz was Louis Armstrong. The greatest composer of the history of jazz was one of the best band leaders Duke Ellington.

During late 1960s and 1970s, the term “Heavy rock” was used to describe loud, electric guitar-based music. In the 1960s, Cream and Jimmie Hendrix were the leaders in this. In the 1970s, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath  and others were called “heavy rock” bands. But “heavy metal” was not used until the late 1970s as a name for this kind of music.

Listed under the title “heavy metal” now are many different types of music. Its influence is left throughout the rock world. Heavy metal may be controversial (causing a lot of angry public discussions and disagreement), but it does not look like going away.

American pop-rock’s newest subgenre is rap music, a simple storytelling style that originated among teenagers in the late 1970s. From an underground street music in the late 1970s, rap has developed into a big business with at least half a dozen groups that sell more than 500, 000 copies of each album.  The most important rap group, Run-D.M.C., has sold over two million copies of its third album, Raising Hell. The group has taken a strong stand against drug use.

2.3 Контроль розуміння прочитаного.

Reading

I see that you know a lot about your favourite music styles. Let`s check your reading skills. I`ll give you cards with the text about famous rap-star Eminem. You have to read this text and after that you`ll do some tasks. So, you have two minutes to read it.

EMINEM

Eminem enjoyed singing since he was a little boy. Eminem made a band with his friend named "M&M" and they released their first album named "Stepping onto the Scene".

After that the boys changed the name of the band and released another album. When he was 17 years old Eminem left school and dedicated totally at his music. He changed the name in Eminem and started a solo career without his colleague. From that moment all the people knew him under the name of Eminem.

He started to record many songs and very soon he released an album. It was very hard for him to make this kind of music because only the black people were accepted to sing rap but he made a good thing and in a very short time he became very famous because of his songs. Almost his all songs were about famous people from the world and in all media appeared many scandal about Eminem's music.

- Each team has got its own task. You have to do this task together in your group, but remember about the roles in the discussion: one of you is a time-keeper,   another one is a secretary and another one is a speaker. The rest of the team also takes an active role in discussion your tasks. Don`t forget about the RULES! Please, be patient, be respectful and be attentive!

Rockers have to answer the questions, Pop lovers have to correct false statements and Rappers have to match the beginnings and the endings of the sentences.

Answer The Questions

Listening

Now you`ll listen to the song “Somebody`s Watching Me”. Everyone has got the text of this song, but some words are missed. Your task is to fill in the missing words with the items from the list.

Let`s read them:

neighbours, tricks, showers, hair, TV, phone, dream, home, price, life

 OK! Let`s listen.

Somebody's Watching Me

I'm just an average man

 with an average life

I work from nine to five,

Hey, hell, I pay the price

All I want is to be left alone

 In my average home

But why do I always feel

Like I'm in the twilight zone?

And I always feel like somebody's watching me

And I have no privacy

I always feel like somebody's watching me

Tell me is it just a dream?

When I come home at night

I bolt the door real tight

People call me on the phone,

I'm trying to avoid

But can the people on TV see me? Or am I just paranoid

When I'm in the shower. I'm afraid to wash my hair

Cause I might open my eyes

And find someone standing there

People say I'm crazy,

Just a little touched

But maybe showers remind me

Of Psycho too much. That's why...

I always feel like somebody's watching me

And I have no privacy

I always feel like somebody's watching me

Who's playing tricks on me?

I don't know anymore

Are the neighbors watching me?

Well is the mailman watching me?

And I don't feel safe anymore,

Oh what a mess!

I wonder who's watching me now. Who? -The IRS?

I always feel like somebody's watching me

And I have no privacy

I always feel like somebody's watching me

Tell me is it just a dream?

I always feel like somebody's watching me

And I have no privacy

I always feel like somebody's watching me

Who's playing tricks on me?

Let`s check up!

“Last Thursday night I watched the concert of American singer, Britney Spears. There was not an empty seat anywhere in the auditorium, although it was an incredibly cold night. Britney’s singing was full of feeling; some songs with anger and others with love. She hypnotised everybody with her performance. Although the auditorium was cold and the sound was sometimes poor, the audience really loved the concert. Many people in the crowd were obviously real fans and they knew the words and they sang along to nearly every song. While I watched and listened, I knew that I was seeing the performance of a real star”.

“Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942. When he was 13 years old his mother died. The boy and the father felt a terrible loss. Paul was keen on football, but music did not play an important part in his childhood. However, he learnt to compose songs on his piano very quickly. Paul was fond of rock’n’roll and Elvis Presley. One of Paul’s first ballads “And I Love Her” is devoted to his girlfriend Jane Asher. It is charming, amazing and very intimate. Paul McCartney is the author of the song “Yesterday”, which is still popular”.

POP STYLES

Blues - traditional black American music. "Blue" means "sad", and many blues songs are about how hard life was for black people.

Gospel - religious music sung in churches in the southern USA, originally sung by African slaves.

Rhythm and Blues black workers in the USA moved from the farms to the Cities. They played the blues with electric guitars — this became "rhythm and blues".

Country and Western is the music of poor white Americans in the 1930 and 1940s. It is still the most popular music in the southern USA.

Rock'n'Roll: white teenagers in the 1950s discovered rhythm and blues, but many radio stations would not play “black” music. Elvis Presley was one of the first white singers to mix "rhythm and blues" and "country and western". The result was rock'n'roll.

Soul is a mixture of "gospel" and "rhythm and blues". The most successful soul singers are probably Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.

Heavy Metal is a style based on "rhythm and blues", but with the instruments amplified so that they are extremely loud. Led Zeppelin was one of the first group to do this.

Reggae started in Jamaica. It is a mixture of American styles "rhythm and blues". Bob Marley made it popular.

Rap: in the 1980s, disc-jockeys in dance clubs began half singing and half talking over instrumental music — and "rap" music was born.

House 1990s dance music based on very fast rhythms and modern electronic sounds. There are now various sub-styles of "house music", such as "techno pop", "trance" and "jungle".

Jazz: an American musical art form which originated around the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions.

Classical music.
