The subject: Transport

The objectives

Practical:      to revise the vocabulary of the topic “Transport”;

                      to revise the using the verb to be in Past Simple Tense;

                      to remember the use of quantifiers lots of, some and any with there was/were and there

                      wasn’t/weren’t;        

                      to improve pronunciation;

                      to develop reading, speaking, writing and listening comprehension skills;

Educational: to expand the students’ knowledge about means of transport in the present and the past;

Developing:  to develop students’ imagination, attention, critical thinking skills;       

Educative:    to bring up the culture of communication, cognitive interest;

                     to bring up love to our native town.

 

The type of the lesson: the lesson of systematization and revision of knowledge

 

Equipment: computer, interactive whiteboard, class books, workbooks, flashcards, teacher’s presentation,

                    handouts

 

The procedure of the lesson

  1. Greetings.
  2. Presentation of the theme of the lesson.
  3. Warming-up activities.
  4. Revising the vocabulary.
  5. Listening comprehension.
  6. Revising grammar.
  7. Dialogical speech T-Ps.
  8. Writing. Grammar.
  9. Hometask.
  10. Summarizing. Putting marks.

 

I. The beginning of the lesson.

1. Greeting.

- Good afternoon, children!

- Take your seats!

 

2. Presentation of the theme of the lesson.

- Today we have an unusual lesson. We are going to the museum! And we’ll remember the means of transport; revise the verbs which help us to speak about the past. It helps you to speak about the history of Kremenchuk. So, let’s start!

3. Warming-up activities.

a) phonetic drill

- But to enter to the museum we need tickets! Look at your desks. Here they are! I’ll read the words on them.

HISTORY  MUSEUM

TICKET

Transport: trains, taxis, trams and others.

Take a taxi or a tram!

  • What sound is there in all these words? /t/
  • Yes, you’re right. It’s the sound /t/. Let’s repeat! /t/, /t/, /t/

-     And now repeat the words:  tickets, transport, trains, taxis, trams.

  • Please, name some other words with the sound /t/.
  • And there we have an instruction how to get to the museum. Repeat after me. Take a taxi or a tram!
  • Ok, let’s take a taxi and go to the museum!

b) warming-up

- And before we enter to the museum, tell me, please:

- Do you like to go to the museum?

- What can you see there?

 

II. Main part.

1. Revising the vocabulary.

a) listening and repeating the words

- And now we are at the museum! Look! These are means of transport. Let’s revise them. So, listen and repeat!

b) game “What’s this?”

- And now let’s play a game. I’ll show you a part of the picture and your task is to tell what this is.

c) riddles (teacher’s presentation)

- Our next task is to guess the riddles about means of transport.

1) I am very fast.

    I can fly.

    I carry people from town to town. (Plane)

 

2) I have no wheels.

    I can swim.

    I can carry people by water. (Ferry)

 

3) I have four wheels.

     I carry lots of people.

     I can travel from city to city. (Bus)

 

4) I can be long. I can be short.

    I can carry lots of people and things.

    My wheels roll only on rails. (Train)

 

     5)  I haven’t wings but I can fly.

       I can go straight up or down. (Helicopter)

 

     6) I am very useful.

         I take people to work and all over the town. (Taxi)

 

     7) I am like a bus and like a train.

         My wheels roll only on rails. (Tram)

 

- And now let’s try to make our own riddle about a motorbike.

      I have two wheels.

      I can carry one or two people.

 

d) phonetical task

- And now find the words with the sound

2. Listening comprehension.

- Now listen to the dialogue and be ready to answer the questions.

       3. Reading.

- And now we are at the stand with the story about our town. Let’s read and try to understand what it is about.

Kremenchuk

      This is my native town Kremenchuk. There are lots of shops, cafes, schools and parks in it. There are many buses, cars, motorbikes and taxis on the streets. But there weren’t any of them two hundred years ago. There were many horses on the streets.

      c) post-reading activity

- So, let’s guess, are these sentences true or false.

Say True (T) or False (F)

  1.  This text is about Kremenchuk.  (T)                              
  2.  There are lots of museums in Kremenchuk.   (F)
  3.  There are many buses, cars, motorbikes and taxis on the streets.   (T)

4. Revising grammar

      a) presenting

- So, what verbs do we use to speak about the past? (was/were)

- When do we use was (were)?

- Open your class books at page 87, ex.2

  

  b) practice

1) And now let’s do ex.3 p. 87

2) – So, let’s make our own sentences about the past of our town, using the verbs was/were (wasn’t/weren’t) (Teacher’s presentation)

For example: There weren’t any helicopters in Kremenchuk two hundred years ago.

 

5. Dialogical speech T-Ps

- So, look at the pictures of our native town and answer the questions:

     Were there buses on the streets? – No, they weren’t.

     Were there horses? – Yes, they were.

     Were there cars and taxis? – No, they weren’t.

     Were there helicopters? – No, they weren’t.

     Were there planes? – No, they weren’t.

     Were there shops? – Yes, they were.

    

  1. Writing
  1. writing in the workbooks
  • So, now open your workbooks and let’s write some sentences about the past, using there was or there were. Ex.1, p.81

 

  1. correcting the mistakes

-  Our next task is to correct the mistakes. Take your handouts and pretend you are teachers. Find and correct the mistakes.

1. There wasn’t lots of cars a hundred years ago. (weren’t)

2. There were a tram on the street yesterday. (was)

3. There wasn’t any planes two hundred years ago. (weren’t)

4. There were a motorbike near the shop yesterday. (was)

III. Conclusion

  1. Home task.
  • So, our visit to the museum is over. Your home task is to do ex. 1, 2, p.80 in your workbooks.
  1. Summing up.
  • You all were good today. Your marks are on these means of transport.
  • And now tell me, please, what means can we see in the museum?
  • What is your favourite kind of transport?
